Dreamy DIY Decor

This is one of my favorite Pinterest finds. Loving the DIY movement because it really complements the simple, rustic feel of the mountains. I could see this idea used as aisle décor, tree decoration or even in lieu of traditional kissing balls on either side of the alter.
It seems like there could be a way to get a small oasis in the center as well to keep the flowers fresh longer. Great way to accent the woodsy mountain back drop of our High Country venues!

4 tips for creating a Wedding Website for your NC Mountain Wedding.

The Boone area of the NC mountains is a wonderful place to host your wedding but keep in mind that if many of your guests aren’t familiar with the High Country roads, weather and peak seasons, etc. it can be a confusing place to navigate.
Lucky for you…. this day in age instead of spending more money on invitations or fielding millions of phone calls, you can create a wedding website or blog for little to no cost whatsoever. (Blogger, Wordpress, Intuit are 3 that I’ve used.) You can include topics such as directions and maps, guest lodging, things to do in the area, tips on what to bring/wear and anything else you think might make weekend special for your friends and family.
Here are some tips to follow when creating your own High Country Wedding Website!
1. Make sure it looks like you! This is your wedding and all about you and your fiance. Your wedding site should reflect your personal style as a couple so everyone, even those who can’t attend, can really get to know both of you.
2. Keep it Tactful. Don’t list the website on your actual invitations!!! It’s much better to include it on another item enclosed in the packet such as the response card. And don’t overemphasize your gift registry. That’s something that still should be spread by word of mouth.
3. Keep it simple. Don’t make your site so full of details and pages that no one can find the essentials that they are looking for. Keep it to a few, well-designed pages.
4. Keep it focused. Your wedding site is for details about your wedding. It’s not the place to include a lot of personal information. Remember, that your friends and relatives are going to be looking at this site for guidance and you want everyone who visits your site to feel comfortable and welcome.

Kill 3 birds with 1 stone AND capture your wedding in the NC Mountains

Thanks to the Niche White Bridal Loft for this steal worthy idea. Having an artist (or talented friend) sketch and then paint the scene of your wedding is such a unique and versatile idea and kills 3 birds with one stone.
1. Frame the original the finished product to forever remember your special day.
2. Make full size prints and have them framed for parents and other close family.
3. Have a print scanned into your computer and use the graphic to send out Thank You cards to all of your guests after the wedding.
Photo’s are wonderful as well and you can always have one your favorite pictures immortalized on canvas after the fact but I love the feeling of authenticity that having a live artist present on your wedding day brings to the overall style of your ceremony. Where on earth is a more picturesque back drop than the NC Mountains???

2011 color trends broken down by seasons for your NC Mountain Wedding.

The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina provide a picturesque backdrop for a beautiful wedding in any season. I find that most brides already have some colors in mind for their wedding without following the “latest trends” but it’s always fun to look and explore different avenues.
I love this palette from Michelle Mospens at My Personal Artist. Michelle does tons of research for her wedding sketchbook and this is only one of the palette’s that she has put together for this coming year.
There are so many ways to use color combinations to enhance the overall style and theme of your wedding but here are some of my favorites broken down by season:
Spring: Color wise, spring comes late in the High Country. The trees don’t get completely lush and green until at least May here. My advice if you’re planning your wedding for April or May is to go with a soft palette and combine delicate touches with a lot of texture.
Favorite Spring Combos: Oyster grey with pear and scallop shell. Carrot orange with moccasin. Persian green and antique white.
Summer: Summer is so so GREEN in the mountains. I love using vibrant colors and mixing in some additional greens to magnify the natural surroundings. Jewel tones are still “in” so don’t be scared to go bold for summer!
Favorite Summer Combos: Tyrian purple and pear. Jewel tones mixed with light or apple greens and neutrals make for a dreamy yet eclectic atmosphere. You have to be really specific with your blues this time of year or you’ll wind up competing with your background. Not to say that you should shy away from them. Teal or agate blue with apple green and some yellows or oranges can look fantastic!
Fall: Everyone knows that Fall is gorgeous in the NC mountains. Folks travel from all around just to gaze at the colors in the Boone area. You can use colors in two different ways in the fall. Either use a lot of greens and neutrals and one accent color to give the natural backdrop center stage or… piggyback on the leaves and use a few “fall colors” to give your event an autumn theme.
Favorite Fall Combos: Dark chocolate and carrot orange. Olivine green, moccasin and dark tangerine. Pear and mocha taupe.
Winter: Texture and greenery. The mountains are sparse yet dramatic in the winter and early spring. If your wedding is during the holidays thinking about incorporating some rich reds and greens and don’t be scared of metallic golds and silvers. Also, winter is a good time to use those shades of blue since you’re not competing with the green all around you.
Favorite Winter Combos: Sangria, oyster grey and grey taupe. Tyrian Purple and scallop shell with some green. Persian green, asparagus and antique white.
The number one rule for color is to have fun, use your imagination and “own it”. That being said, it would be difficult NOT to have a beautiful wedding in the NC High Country.

13 Tips for tying the knot in the NC Mountains

1) Bring a sweater or shawl and advise your guests to do the same, it gets chilly in the High Country at night no matter what season it is.

2) In addition to summer, peak season in the High Country is also the "leaf season" in October. Appalachian State's University's Homecoming game, the Woolly Worm Festival and other various events and Fall Festivals happen around that time so make sure you block off rooms for your guests well in advance.

3) The ground can be rocky so keep that in mind for your outdoor ceremony/reception when you're putting a runner, shepherds hooks or anything else in the ground...bring a hammer and some nails. I've definitely put down a runner with bobby pins and a blunt object before.

4) The weather in general can be very unpredictable in the Boone/Blowing Rock/Banner Elk areas, make sure you have a indoor back up plan just in case. A good local site to check out is Ray's Weather

5) We don't usually have too much trouble with mosquitoes or no-see-ems in general but wait until the last minute to bring the cake out if you're having an outdoor ceremony so no bugs get stuck to the cake. By the same token (and this might be obvious but I've seen it happen) don't put the cake in the sun, it will melt!

6) Yes it is possible to get married somewhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the North Carolina Mountains. How it works is that you figure out where you want to get married and apply for a special use permit through the National Park Service.

"Activities such as sporting events, pageants, public spectator attractions, entertainment, wedding ceremonies, or large group gatherings require a permit. A $60 application fee is required and an additional $135 administrative fee is due upon issuance of the permit. A $60/hour monitoring permit is also charged during the event. Call park headquarters at (828) 271 4779 ext 246 for more information.

** Fees are subject to change.

If you want to get married on the Parkway and do not wish to have a large ceremony, then you may not need to have a permit. The permits are required for event gatherings of “many” people that would cause interference with the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway for other travelers."

7)There are lots of local farms in the area. Ask your caterer if they can incorporate some local and or organic foods or flowers into your reception.

8) Rhododendrons mostly bloom in June but sometimes a little later in the higher elevations.

9) Not necessarily a regional thing but...wedges instead of spiky heels are best if you're going to be outside (especially if you're in the wedding party, you don't want to sink into the ground going down the aisle).

10) The High Country can be windy! Take that into consideration with table decorations and make sure to bring double sided tape. Taping the tablecloth to the table in a few strategic places will help to ensure that your table decorations stay down. My advice is to use a little bit of double sided tape in the middle of the table once you have the table cloth straight and then 4 small pieces on the edge of the table.

11) Duct Tape, pens, bobby pins, safety pins, floral wire and tape, bleach pen, twine/rope, mints, a sense of humor.

12) Use the natural scenery of the area and the current season and let it flow into your decorating theme.

13) Don't stress!!!! Little mishaps happen there and there but that's what makes everyone's special day memorable and different. Focus on the positive and just have fun with your friends and family. The rest will work itself out.

Blowing Rock Weddings at Westglow Spa and Resort

There are so many picturesque venues and locations to host your Blue Ridge Mountain wedding in the High Country of Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk, but it's difficult to find a more stately and elegant setting than Westglow Resort and Spa.

Located on 30 acres off of Highway 221, (5 to 10 minutes from Downtown Blowing Rock), Westglow boasts huge gorge views in every direction. Westglow can accommodate parties up to 150 and you can choose go get married inside, out on the lawn or in a tent out in the courtyard. You can book the entire Manor House for your wedding party or just book the site for your wedding or reception. They also cater bridal luncheons and rehearsal dinners.

Did I mention that Westglow has a spa to pamper the wedding party and bride on location??? Westglow provides in house catering and an "on site" coordinator. It's up to you to bring in your own florist, cake, music, wedding planner and photographer.

There are lots of different indoor and outdoor options at Westglow which is a big plus considering how unpredictable the weather can be in the North Carolina High Country! For more information and pictures, check out their site.

The Green Park Inn – All New and Booking Weddings for 2011

Get excited folks. The Green Park Inn will be booking weddings for the 2011 season!

Built in 1882, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Green Park was extensively refurbished and restored in the fall of 2010. Rooms are now available for ski season and they put the final touches on the bar, Restaurant and Banquet Rooms this winter.

If you are dreaming of a Blowing Rock wedding, this unique indoor venue could be a great fit for you. They have hired local Chef James Welch (former chef at Crippen's in Blowing Rock) to head up their restaurant. I've spoken with him and from what I hear, he will work a wonderful meal around your taste and budget.

They don't have all of their information ready to put out to the public quite yet but if you're interested in more information I'd be more than happy to accompany you over there to meet with them and scope out the venue. Create your own photo booth for your Blue Ridge Mountain Wedding

This is a fun idea that can be inexpensive and tons of fun for all of your guests. Now that disposable cameras on all of the guests tables are passé with the onset of digital cameras, creating your own "photobooth" can be an exciting way to get those great candid shots with different groups of people and cut down on the formal pictures of family members and close friends.

You can either set up a digital camera on a tripod or bring back the old polaroid so that your guests can have something fun to take home with them.

The Boone/Blowing Rock area of the NC Blue Ridge mountains have millions of natural, spectacular backdrops, but you can also create your own with a tapestry or even use fun piece of fabric. I suggest including some props too so your guests can get creative, have fun and capture some really wonderful shots!

Some Top Wedding Locations in the NC High Country

Whether you live here or are planning a destination wedding in the Boone/Blowing Rock area, there are tons of creative options for places to hold your mountain dream wedding.

Here's a list of some of my favorite places in the High Country:

The Taylor House Inn This beautiful B and B in Valle Crucis makes it easy for the wedding party and close family to all stay together and not have to go anywhere! Wedding and reception can both take place on site. Also, they have a wonderful kitchen with lots of room for your caterer to work.

Along those same lines, you can also rent out the Inn at Crestwood for your wedding. Located between Boone and Blowing Rock on Shulls Mill Road, they are larger than the Taylor House and have a great deal of options to accommodate you. It's also a place where you can have your wedding somewhere else and book them just for the reception. They have both indoor and outdoor options. Their caterer is "in house".

Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock is another way to go. There are plenty of places for out of town guests and the wedding party to stay whether it's at the Lodge or renting out condo's near by. Typically brides like to get married down by the lake and then have a tent nearby or closer to the lodge but there are a lot of different choices and configurations that you can explore if you book early enough. They also provide "in house" catering.

The Green Park Inn is completely renovated and booking for the 2011 Season. You can have wedding and reception there or just the reception. They have “in house” catering by Chef James Welch formerly of Crippens Country Inn and Restaurant and a couple of different options for banquet rooms. Needless to say it’s convenient since all of your guests can stay together on site.

The Meadowbrook Inn has a banquet room that you can use as well as their sun room in conjunction with the bar for a smaller affair. They also have an upstairs room that can be held as a rain location if you choose to have your ceremony outside. They’re conveniently located right in the heart of downtown Blowing Rock

If you are planning to have the wedding and reception at two different locations, we have a couple of historic chapels in the area that are great for smaller weddings. There are also a handful of churches that will host your wedding even if you are not a member of the church. There are public parks and gardens that allow weddings in the Boone area. Check out Daniel Boone Native Gardens and Shady Grove nursery.

Reese and Drew’s Fall Wedding in Banner Elk

Here's some pictures from Reese and Drew Meisenheimer's stunning October wedding in Banner Elk. The ceremony took place at St. Bernadette's in Linville overlooking Grandfather Mountain and the reception was hosted by the Best Western in Banner Elk. Highly recommend them, they are wonderful to work with and the food was great. Everything went off without a hitch!

Fall weddings in the High Country

It's almost fall in the Blue Ridge High Country of North Carolina. The crisp clean air and clear blue sky of September make me nostalgic for changing leaves, pumpkin patches, long drives on the parkway and sipping cider on the porch in a warm sweater. My husband and I had our own wedding in Valle Crucis in the fall so of course I'm partial to this time of year it but still, there's something magical about the seasons changing from warm to cool that really seems to stimulates your senses. Anyway, these are some old fall but my next wedding is the first weekend in October and I can't wait to post up some more great pictures!

September - my favorite month for weddings in the NC High Country

September is such a wonderful time in the Boone and Blowing Rock areas. You still have warm days they are combined with cool crisp evenings. The weather varies from year to year but is usually pretty great across the board.
If you're waiting for the leaves to turn you'd better stick to October but with the leaves come "leafers" and tons of traffic. October is probably our busiest season up here and September is a little bit of an off month with kids being back in school.
If you're not wanting to fight crowds then September might be the month for you! Just make sure to let your guests know to bring the appropriate attire especially if you are having an outdoor event.
If you are planning on having a wedding on a busy weekend whether leaf season or otherwise make sure you plan way ahead so that the vendors that you want to use aren't already booked. You can always pick a day other than Saturday if you're having trouble booking the people and venues that you want. Don't be afraid to ask for discounted prices for "off days" as well.

Is a wedding program a must?

You've got your venue booked, cake picked out, florist on board, the dress, the music and the food. It's 2 weeks before your big day and "whoops" what about the wedding program???

Relax, it's ok to skip the programs, especially if you're having a more laid back mountain affair. If you do decide to provide your guests with a wedding program, here are some ideas of things that you might want to include:

The date and time of the wedding

The venue

The full names of everyone in the wedding party and some special family members if you want

Quotes, poetry or scripture that is meaningful to you

A thank you for your guests for being there to celebrate with you

It's optional whether you include any of your vows

Some couples also include their new home address

Don't get overwhelmed, it's easy to create your own online. Some fun ideas are putting your program on a fan (especially for a summer wedding). You could also use a site like shutterfly to incorporate a picture of the two of you along with some text. They don't have any set up just for wedding programs but you could tweak the format of the announcements or save the date cards for a personal touch.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun with it and let it reflect the style of your High Country wedding.

Sarah and Leland's July 4th Weekend Taylor House Wedding

Sarah and Leland tied the knot at Valle Crucis' beautiful Taylor House Inn run by Tessa and Bernard Russo. Their July 3rd wedding was beautiful and had flawless weather. They incorporated the July 4th holiday as well as their love of cats into the overall theme and created a simple yet laid back mountain wedding.

High Country Wedding Expo 2010

Chetola Resort will host the High Country Wedding Expo this Sunday, March 28th from 1-4 pm. There will be an assortment of local photographers, planners, caterers, officiants, bakers, officiants etc. There will also be a fashion show and lots of prizes! All proceeds and canned goods go to benefit the Hospitality House in Boone. If you're planning a wedding or any other special event in the high country, this is a great place to meet and greet local vendors. We are all looking forward to a great afternoon!
